SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A former Spartanburg High School teacher and coach is accused of sexually touching a student.

The Spartanburg Herald Journal reported Friday that authorities had charged Courtney Clark Kay with third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under age 16.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation after a parent complained that the 29-year-old teacher inappropriately communicated with her 14-year-old child through Facebook. Kay was the student's science teacher. She also previously coached the girls' junior varsity volleyball team.

Investigators say they later determined that Kay touched the victim in a sexually inappropriate manner while on the school campus and that the teacher confessed to most of the victim's allegations.

Kay was booked into jail Friday about 9:45 p.m. It was not immediately clear if she yet had an attorney.
