Northwood Academy’s Amber Campbell closing in on 3,000 career points
Northwood Academy junior basketball standout Amber Campbell is poised to become only the fourth player in SCISA history to score 3,000 points in a career. Campbell is averaging 31.8 points per game and needs 20 points tonight against Pinewood Prep to join the elite club.
Nancy Derrick of Wardlaw and Ashley Scott of Northwood both scored more than 4,000 points and went on to play college ball. Derrick played at Auburn and Scott played at the College of Charleston.
Heathwood Hall’s Brionna Dickerson, who went on to play at the University of South Carolina, scored more than 3,400 points.
Derrick and Scott played on the varsity team in the seventh grade.
But SCISA changed its eligibility rule and Campbell couldn’t play on varsity until the eighth grade.
Dickerson’s bid for 4,000 points came up short when she missed her senior year with an injury.
Campbell has led the Chargers to a 24-3 record. She is averaging 31.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.3 steals and 2.8 assists per game. The Chargers conclude the regular season with a home game on Tuesday and begin tournament play next weekend.
Campbell is only a junior but is getting recruited by SEC, ACC, Big East and Atlantic 10 schools.
The SCISA state wrestling championships were held recently, and Hammond was crowned champion while Cardinal Newman was runner-up.
Pinewood Prep fielded a team for the first time this season and fared well with a third-place finish.
Three Panthers won individual state titles and earned all-state status: Jeremy Hunt (152), T.J. Wilson (160) and Dallas Dial (182).
The Panthers’ Matthew Latham (113) and Cameron Pappas (285) finished second, as did Ridge Christian’s Jonathan Draggers (195).
O’Dell tops 1,000
The St. John’s Christian girls basketball team is making progress under coach Chris Pouyat and has an 8-12 record, including 6-2 in its region.
O’Dell tops 1,000
That’s not too bad for the SCISA Class A school that plays 11 of its 20 games against Class AA and AAA schools.
The star of the team is senior Jenna O’Dell, a captain and the team’s leading scorer.
On Tuesday, she celebrated Senior Night by scoring a career-high 31 points in a victory over Cathedral Academy. She also passed the 1,000-point mark for her career. She was voted the region player of the year.
St. John’s Christian plays Faith Christian tonight. A win would put the Cavaliers in the region championship.
