Police: Gunshot wound reported at North Charleston hotel self-inflicted
A gunshot wound reported at a North Charleston hotel was self-inflicted, police say.
Police charged Shawn Corey Walsh, 34, with filing a false report and possession of methamphetamine in connection with the incident, spokesman Spencer Pryor said.
Police arrived at North Charleston Inn, 2934 West Montague Avenue, about 7:30 p.m. and saw an injured man standing in front of the hotel, Pryor said.
The man told police he was walking near his room when another man approached him and asked for a light for his cigarette.
The man told police that he went into his room to get a lighter. Then, he said he saw the suspect standing in front of his room.
The man reported that his attacker forced his way into the room and pulled out a pistol, Pryor said.
He told police the gun went off as the two men struggled over the weapon, and that he was shot in his right hand.
Police later determined that the wound was accidentally self-inflicted, Pryor said.
The incident is still under investigation, Pryor said.
