The parent company of Food Lion is laying off 350 corporate-level employees and eliminating 150 open positions.

The Salisbury Post reports Delhaize America CEO Roland Smith told employees in an internal email this week all the layoffs will be above the store manager level.

Delhaize America, which is based in Salisbury along with Food Lion, has more than 1,500 stores and several chains that include Bottom Dollar Food, Food Lion, Harveys, Hannaford Supermarkets, Reid’s and Sweetbay.

Employees will know by Tuesday if they will lose their job. Delhaize America employs about 100,000 people overall.

Food Lion, which makes up the lion’s share of Delhaize, has struggled, closing 113 underperforming stores last year, including two in Mount Pleasant and one in Moncks Corner, and pulling out of Florida. It announced eight more store closings in January, including one off St. Andrews Boulevard in West Ashley.

“Despite best intentions and efforts, our cost-saving targets were not achieved,” Smith said in a Jan. 11 memo.
