The Citadel has scooped up a couple of verbal commitments from players who had plans to attend BCS schools, putting the finishing touches on its football recruiting class.

The Bulldogs got late commitments from cornerback James Julius of Evans High School in Orlando; he had once been committed to Pitt.

And running back Devan Robbins of South Point HS in Belmont, N.C., committed to The Citadel after his hopes to attend Georgia Tech fell through.

Robbins, 6-0 and 180 pounds, was the Big 22 player of the year in the Charlotte area, and had been recruited by Georgia Tech for two years, according to South Point athletic director Scott Lee.

“It didn’t work out with Georgia Tech, and Devan was ready to move on,” Lee said. “He’s a great kid and will fit in well there at The Citadel.”

Julius, 5-11 and 170 pounds, had committed to Pittsburgh before a coaching change there scrambled his plans.

“Exceptionally talented, a warrior,” Evans coach Chip Gierke said. “I can’t say enough good things about him.”

The Citadel is expected to sign about 20 players, including receiver Rudder Brown of Wando.
