West Ashley man convicted of trafficking crack cocaine
A Charleston County jury has found a West Ashley man guilty of trafficking in crack cocaine and he has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett A. Wilson announced that a jury convicted Norris Tyrone Steplight, 29, of of trafficking in cocaine base after a trial that ended Tuesday in Charleston.
The jury deliberated for less than an hour, Wilson said. Steplight faced a sentencing range between 25 and 30 years.
Circuit Judge Kristi Harrington sentenced Steplight to 25 years in prison. Assistant solicitors Stephanie Linder and Ran Stoney prosecuted the case and James Smiley represented Steplight.
Charleston police charged Steplight after a traffic stop in which they found more than 12 grams of crack cocaine on Steplight, Wilson said. Steplight was prosecuted as a repeat offender, having previously been convicted of numerous narcotics and weapons offenses, she said.
