A sailboat heading toward Johns Island gut stuck Wednesday afternoon under the Wappoo Cut bridge. The boat continued on its way after the bridge was opened.

A sailboat got stuck under the Wappoo bridge this afternoon.

The mast appeared to be about 2 feet too tall to clear the bridge between West Ashley and James Island as the boat was heading toward Johns Island, and the vessel hung up on the underside of the span about 1:30 p.m.

Charleston police blocked one of the traffic lanes toward the island while bridge inspectors, emergency units and boats from the Sheriff’s Office were called in case they were needed.

The bridge opened about 2 p.m., and the sailboat continued on its way. No damage was reported to the bridge. There was no report on the sailboat.

One of the lanes toward James Island was still closed at 2:30 p.m. as officials continued their inspections and reports.
