Sheriff Al Cannon today announced that the Charleston County jail was internationally accredited by the America Correctional Association.
The Al Cannon Detention Center is the only facility in the state to hold the honor, Sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said. Only 135 of the about 3,300 local jails nationwide hold that accreditation, he said. “The awarding of this national accreditation is a remarkable achievement only made possible because of the dedicated and committed staff of the detention center,” Cannon said in a news release. “I congratulate them on this accomplishment, it reflects great honor on the entire Sheriff’s Office and I am proud of this recognition.”
The accreditation process began about five years ago, but focused on policies spanning the last three years, Brady said. The current detention facility was opened in May of 2010, Brady said.
