City Councilman announces meeting on proposed tax hike to pay for more police in schools
A downtown Charleston city councilman is holding a town hall meeting Thursday for constituents to ask questions about Mayor Joe Riley’s proposed tax hike to help fund putting police in local elementary schools.
Councilman Mike Seekings is sponsoring the event beginning at 6 p.m. at 75 Calhoun St., on the 3rd Floor.
Riley this week proposed a $3.9 million tax increase that would help provide police patrols for elementary schools in the city, more police for downtown’s entertainment zone and for two new fire stations and other fire needs.
Cost of the increase would add another $40 in property taxes on a home valued at $250,000.
Seekings said he has not seen all of what is proposed and wasn’t ready to address support.
