Rep. Brown questions S.C. Transportation Infrastructure Bank funding for I-526
State Rep. Robert Brown, D Hollywood, has asked Attorney General Alan Wilson to review the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank’s decisions around funding for I-526.
The bank, which funds large transportation projects such as the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, in August approved an additional $138 million for the project. But the money won’t be available until after 2020. The entire $558 million completion of the road across Johns and James islands will be paid for with the money the bank borrows by selling bonds.
Brown has questioned whether “forward bonding” is legal.
Brown isn’t the only person questioning the bank’s operations. Members of the General Assembly have filed bills to restructure the bank, possibly dissolving its board and bringing it under the control of the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
