Coastal rains not falling often enough
Charleston County is one of only two in the state where drought conditions have been officially tagged to be worse. The other is Beaufort County.
The state’s Drought Response Committee this week declared the two counties in moderate drought, a status level that means there is an increasing threat of drought. The counties had been in incipient drought, meaning the threat of drought exists.
Berkeley and Dorchester counties remain in moderate drought status.
Below normal rainfalls persists for the eastern half of the state from the Midlands to coast, said Hope Mizell, state climatologist.
In contrast, 26 counties across the Upstate and Pee Dee saw conditions improve.
