Johns Island Conservancy opposed to Kiawah River finance plan
The Johns Island Conservancy, a nonprofit organization with a mission to preserve and safeguard the natural habitat of Johns Island, has released a report opposed to Charleston County Council approving a controversial financing plan for the Beach Co.’s Kiawah River Plantation development.
Council soon will consider whether to approve a tax-increment financing district for the high-end development on the southern end of Johns Island.
Under the plan, some basic infrastructure for the development — including roads and a sewage treatment facility — would be paid for with future tax revenue the development would generate.
Beach Co. officials and supporters have said the TIF would help launch the project. And in return, the development would bring in a great deal of tax revenue in the future.
