EDISTO ISLAND — The fishing pier at remote Steamboat Landing has re-opened after repairs.

The pier, alongside the boat landing at the end of Steamboat Landing Road, had been closed for a year as crews replaced an old wooden pier. The new pier is built on concrete pilings with aluminum decking and composite rails. It stretches to 22-feet deep tidal water in Steamboat Creek, and can be reached by wheelchair, according to a Charleston Park and Recreation Commission news release. The creek is on the island’s north end.

The pier was built with S.C. Department of Natural Resources funds from the sale of saltwater fishing licenses.

A grand opening will be held Feb. 8 at 11 a.m.
