Two arrested after North Charleston man found dead in SUV; police say victim had been shot before

Two men were arrested today after a man was found shot to death inside an SUV in North Charleston Wednesday.

Jalann Williams, 20, of Stall Road, faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to North Charleston police.

Robert Mitchell II, 33, of Yeamans Hall Road in Hanahan, faces a murder charge.

They are being held in the Charleston County jail and are scheduled for a bond hearing Friday morning.

They are accused of killing Akeen Jamal Ladson, 21, of Angel Court. Ladson was found dead before 6 p.m. Wednesday inside a crashed Ford Expedition near 6852 Ward Ave., according to an incident report.

Ladson had also been shot three times last summer, according to the police.

Police spokesman Spencer Pryor said that Ladson had been meeting with someone Wednesday to conduct a drug transaction.

Officers from the North Charleston Police Department arrived to find that three doors of the sport-utility vehicle were open. A distraught woman was walking around and talking on a cellphone.

Witnesses told police they had seen two black men wearing black hooded sweatshirts running from the Ford after the shooting. The men also were thought to be wearing cargo pants. One had a shaved head, and the other had short twists in his hair, Pryor said.

Officers reported that Ladson was slumped over the center console. His feet were in the front passenger area. He was already dead by the time the police made it to the scene, which is just south of Midland Park Road and west of Interstate 26.

Ladson also was shot July 26 near Oak Leaf and Northside drives, where he suffered three bullet wounds to the chest and each arm. The scene was near his home on Angel Court.

North Charleston officers arrested 21-year-old Jamal Stephon Base of Patriot Boulevard in connection with the summertime incident. It’s wasn’t immediately known how Base had been identified as a suspect in that shooting.

Base remained jailed without a chance to post bail Wednesday, when the most recent shooting occurred. He faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

The shooting was the first homicide reported this year in North Charleston.
