Authorities have determined that Assistant U.S. Attorney Alston Badger died Saturday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten said today.
Badger, 51, of Mount Pleasant was found dead in the parking lot of the Tides Medical Arts Center on Wingo Way, according to police. An officer on patrol found him lying on the ground beside a red sport utility vehicle, with a shotgun near his body, according to a police report.
Wooten initially declined to provide more details or specify a cause of death. She said Badger’s family specifically requested that she not release that information.
Wooten confirmed today that Badger’s death had been ruled a suicide. She said she released the information against the family’s wishes because it is a public record requested by The Post and Courier under the state’s Freedom of Information Act.
