One lane is open on the eastbound side of Interstate 526 heading into Mount Pleasant. The section of the interstate was closed while police cleaned up a diesel fuel spill following an accident.
A tractor trailer carrying cargo was “traveling too fast for conditions” on I-526 eastbound between Virginia and the Don Holt bridge and rear ended the car in front, according to North Charleston Police Department spokesman Spencer Pryor.
The vehicle struck by the truck rear-ended another vehicle and the truck carrying cargo began to leak fuel, said Pryor in an email.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control was called to the scene.
The eastbound section of 526 was closed for nearly four hours before officials opened one lane at about 11:47 a.m.
