1st District filing period closed at noon
The filing period for the 1st Congressional District race and vacancy has ended, and 19 are seeking the seat.
The candidates include 16 Republicans and three Democrats vying to fill the vacancy created when incumbent Tim Scott was selected to fill the U.S. Senate opening following Jim DeMintís resignation to lead the Heritage Foundation.
The 19 candidates would appare to be a record number for a 1st District race ó at least in modern times.
Itís not a national record, though. Twenty-two candidates emerged in Chicago to seek the seat vacated by U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.
The Republican and Democratic primaries will be held March 19. Runoffs would be held April 2. The special election May 7.
