Eastbound Interstate 526 reopened about 6 p.m. after North Charleston police confirmed a fatal crash this afternoon at Rivers Avenue.

The crash, the second highway fatality on I-526 within 24 hours, involved six vehicles, according to North Charleston police.

The wreck occurred in the eastbound lanes near Rivers Avenue about noon. It appeared that two semi-trucks and four cars were involved in the accident, police spokesman Spencer Pryor said in an email.

Two people were taken to hospitals, he said. Traffic was at a standstill.

Witnesses said that the crash happened when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a car stopped for an earlier wreck this morning.

Authorities had just started waving traffic around that wreck on eastbound I-526 near Virginia Avenue, where fuel spilled on the pavement about 8 a.m.

The two crashes closed the eastbound lanes for about 10 hours.
