WISE COLUMN: New pet store to open in Summerville
Petland will open a new store Feb. 16 at the Summerville Galleria shopping center.
The new store at 975 Bacons Bridge Road will feature a large selection of tropical fish, small animals, reptiles and kittens, as well as pet merchandise.
It will be in the former Burke's Outlet space, which moved last fall to 1215 Main St. in Summerville.
Founded in 1967, the privately held Ohio corporation operates stores in the United States, Canada, Japan, South Africa, China and Mexico and will be opening its first store in Israel later this year.
The Learning Center, an educational materials supply shop in West Ashley since 1985, is closing. Owner Joe Del Collo Jr. said the final day for the 8,400-square-foot business at 2049 Savannah Highway is Thursday. Look for items up to 60 percent off. Fixtures are for sale, too.
The shop used to be in South Windermere Shopping Center but decided to move to a larger space in West Island Shopping Center in early 2008 before the financial markets collapsed that fall when the housing bubble burst.
Collo said the shop has struggled for the past four years, but sales tanked considerably in the last quarter of 2012, which led him to the decision to shutter the business.
Fitness buffs in downtown Charleston now have a new place to get in shape.

The ballet barre workout focuses on areas of the body women struggle with the most. It lifts seats, tones thighs and upper body and creates long, lean muscles of a dancer through small isometric movements. Look for opening discounts and class registrations.
