Lowcountry Oyster Festival expected to draw thousands to Boone Hall today
About 80,000 pounds of oysters will be steamed and served hot today at the 30th annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival.
The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant.
Organizers are expecting about 11,000 attendees, which means traffic backups are expected. In addition to the plantation’s main entrance off Long Point Road, a second entrance off U.S. Highway 17 near Boone Hall Farm’s Pumpkin Patch will be open.
A free park-and-ride trolley service will tote visitors arriving at the Highway 17 entrance to the festival’s rear gates.
No coolers, pets or tailgating are allowed. Oyster knives and gloves are OK, and they will be available for purchase on site.
Advance tickets are $12 and can be purchased on the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association’s website, www.charlestonrestaurantassociation.com.
The association sponsors the event.
Tickets at the gate are $15, and kids 10 and younger get in free. Buckets of oysters (about 3 dozen) cost $10 apiece, and other food is available for purchase.
