17 candidates now in 1st District race
Former Gov. Mark Sanford and state Rep. Peter McCoy of James Island have filed for the 1st Congressional District, bringing the total number of Republican candidates to 14.
Key dates
Monday: Filing closes at noon.
Feb. 12: Candidates invited to appear before the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce in what is expected to be their first joint appearance.
March 19: GOP and Democratic primaries will be held.
April 2: Primary runoffs, if needed.
May 7: General election.
On the Democratic side, educator Bobbie Rose, who lost her bid for the seat last November, also filed, bringing that party’s field to three.
The seat became vacant when Tim Scott was appointed a U.S. senator, and Republican and Democratic voters will go to the polls March 19 to chose their candidate. Runoffs will be held on April 2 if no one gets more than 50 percent of that vote.
Other Republican candidates are Goose Creek businessman Jeff King, state Rep. Chip Limehouse of Charleston, Sullivan’s Island businessman Keith Blandford, state Sen. Larry Grooms of Bonneau, Tim Larkin, Charleston business owner Jonathan Hoffman, former Charleston County Councilman Curtis Bostic, former state Sen. John Kuhn, former Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash, state Rep. Andy Patrick of Hilton Head Island, Charleston teacher Teddy Turner and former Charleston County School Board member Elizabeth Moffly.
The Democrats are Rose, Clemson Restoration Institute development director Elizabeth Colbert-Busch and Charleston businessman Martin Skelly.
The field could get even larger. Filing doesn’t close until noon Monday.
