South Carolina Army Guard unit deploying to Afghanistan

MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. -- More than 60 South Carolina Army National Guard soldiers are beginning a one-year deployment to Afghanistan.

Officials say members of the 2-238th Aviation, General Support Aviation Battalion gathered for a ceremony on Saturday at McEntire Joint National Guard Base.

The group that includes pilots, maintenance and other support personnel first goes to Texas for training before going overseas.

The unit is also taking several CH-47 Chinook helicopters on the deployment.
