Large Martin Luther King parade shaping up for Saturday morning in North Charleston
A parade that’s said to be North Charleston’s first-ever celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is shaping up to be a large one when it kicks off tomorrow morning.
Rev. Samuel Dennis, chairman of the North Charleston MLK Celebration Committee, said more than 40 groups have signed up to participate, and calls were still coming in today.
The parade begins at 11 a.m. at Durant and Rivers avenues, then proceeds up Durant to Park Circle for a community unity event followed by fun activities lasting until 4 p.m.
“We had been having a tri-county celebration, and then three years ago we decided to have our own celebration,” Dennis said. “This is the result.”
He said parade participants range from scouting groups and social clubs to hair salons and motorcycle enthusiasts.
“It is our first one, so we’re letting all sorts of folks come in (to the parade),” Dennis said.
