Soldier from Mount Pleasant charged in fatal shooting
Media reports from Anchorage, Alaska say an infantryman soldier from Mount Pleasant has been charged in the deadly shooting of another soldier.
The suspect is identified as 23-year-old Spc. Marshall D. Drake. He was charged Tuesday with failing to obey regulations and the negligent killing of 25-year-old Pfc. Grant Wise, according to media reports quoting Army officials. Drake was stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Wise was reportedly found dead from a gunshot wound in Drake’s barracks on Christmas morning.
One of the charges say Drake violated US Army Alaska regulations by wrongfully storing his personally owned firearm and ammunition in his assigned barracks room.
He also allegedly failed to disclose and register a personally owned firearm.
Published reports say Drake is an infantryman assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
He joined the Army in Oct. 2009 and was assigned to the Alaska base in March 2010. He served in Afghanistan from Dec. 2011 to Oct. 2012.
