Small Business Administration lauds Hanahan engineering firm for job creation
HANAHAN — The head of the U.S. Small Business Administration lauded UEC Electronics today for creating manufacturing jobs in the U.S.
“Our small businesses are one of our core assets,” said Karen Mills, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, after she toured the firm. “This is a real production operation that proves something — don’t count American manufacturing out.”
UEC Electronics, a Charleston-area engineering and manufacturing company that supplies parts to the defense and aerospace industries, was cited in 2011 by the federal agency when it earned a spot in the SBA 100 — an initiative recognizing small businesses that had grown 100 or more employees since receiving SBA assistance.
Owned by Rebecca Ufkes, the 16-year-old company employs 194 people, a 49 percent increase since August 2011. Ufkes was named runner-up National Small Business Person of the Year in 2010.
