Police: Man kills himself after beating wife with bat
SUMMERVILLE — Mercia King-Ellis was attacked by her estranged husband who beat her with a baseball bat, police said.
Investigators said the man, Robert Ellis, 60, killed himself after the attack.
Summerville police responded to a home on Daffodil Street early Thursday in reference to a domestic dispute.
A witness told police that her mother had been hit with a metal baseball bat. The witness said she heard her mother screaming and found her bleeding from the head, police said.
King-Ellis, 56, was taken to Trident Hospital, where she was treated and released. She told investigators that her husband had attacked her.
King-Ellis said she was attacked when she was opening the car door. Ellis snuck up behind her and hit her in the arms, head and back, she told police.
She was treated for a laceration to her head and contusions on her arms.
Investigators said they received a call from Ellis’ son, who told them he had just discovered his father had hung himself.
