Next month’s Mount Pleasant Rotary Soccer Classic at Blackbaud Stadium will give fans an opportunity to see the area’s top high school soccer players.
The Soccer Classic, scheduled Feb. 9, is a daylong series of exhibitions featuring about 30 boys and girls varsity and junior varsity teams from Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
“This is not a tournament format. It will be 30-minute exhibition games on the Charleston Battery’s field,” said Anne Toole of the Mount Pleasant Rotary Club. “This is our 29th annual Soccer Classic and the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant’s major fundraiser and the kick-off to the high school soccer season.”
Gates for the event will open at 9 a.m., with matches running from 10:30 a.m. through 7 p.m. There is a $4 admission fee for adults, while children will be admitted free.
In addition to the soccer exhibitions, youngsters will be able to participate in Kicks for Kids, Frisbee Toss and a Jump Castle.
As a prelude to the event, this year’s Soccer Classic also will offer for the first time a silent auction and party Feb. 8 at Three Lions Pub, the Charleston Battery’s private club. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the auction running 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door (email email@example.com).
Toole said auction items will include box seats for the Family Circle Cup, golf outings, vacation rentals, restaurant gift cards, a RiverDogs Weekend Package and more.
Toole said the Soccer Classic benefits the Lowcountry Food Bank’s BackPack Buddies program that distributes backpacks of food to more than 2,300 students weekly at more than 49 schools.
The Mount Pleasant Rotary Club also awards scholarships to local high school seniors and adults for continuing education and has presented scholarships worth more than $120,000 over the past 10 years.
Other tournament beneficiaries are Happy Feet, a program that gives free new shoes to local children, and the Dictionary Project, which gives dictionaries to all local third-grade students.
