Mount Pleasant will soon be sporting a new specialty sporting goods store.
Carrboro, N.C.-based Fleet Feet Sports plans to open a new, 2,200-square-foot shop by March or April at 881 Houston Northcutt Blvd. in Whole Foods-anchored Patriots Plaza Shopping Center. That's across the street from On The Run, a sporting goods store in the Harris Teeter-anchored shopping center on Houston Northcutt.
Chris and Amy Minkel of Mount Pleasant are the franchisees for what is likely to be the company's 100th store. It currently has 98 across the country, with another set to open in February in Arkansas.
The shop will cater to runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts with footwear, apparel and accessories that can't be found in other shops, according to Fleet Feet spokeswoman Robin Goby. It also will handle medical referrals to help people find the right items for their condition.
Piece of the pie
An old warehouse near Taco Boy at 217 Huger St. is being razed to make way for a new restaurant on Charleston's upper peninsula. Nashville-based DeSano Pizza Bakery hopes to fire up its wood-fired ovens by the spring at 94 Stuart St. Imported ingredients such as Mediterranean sea salt and mozzarella di bufala are shipped in from Italy for the Neopolitan-style pizzas. In addition to pizza, look for calzones and cannoli.
By the sea
Trattoria Lucca chef and restaurateur Ken Vedrinski will soon open a new restaurant on Isle of Palms. By mid-March he plans to bring Coda del Pesce to the former Hucks site at 1130 Ocean Blvd. The restaurant name translates to tail of the fish or tale of the fish, playing into his Italian seafood restaurant concept.
Two months after closing Jack's Cosmic Dogs in West Ashley, restaurateur Jack Hurley has opened his new dining concept in the same location in Avondale. Mex 1 Coastal Cantina is now open and serving lunch and dinner seven days a week at 817 St. Andrews Blvd.
The restaurant, named after the renowned highway on Mexico's Baja Peninsula that connects Tijuana with Cabo San Lucas, offers Southern California and Baja Mexico cuisine as well as a full-service bar managed by Hurley's son, Morgan. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
After more than two months of tasty burger creations from residents of the Lowcountry, eight weekly winners have been chosen for the Big Billy's Burger Joint “Build a Burger” contest. Restaurant patrons can see which burger will reign supreme and be named “Best Burger” by celebrity judges at 6 p.m. Saturday at the restaurant at 5070 International Blvd. in North Charleston. Guests can enjoy a food buffet, live music and drink specials.
The winner will receive $500 and the addition of their unique burger creation to the restaurant's menu specials. Judging will begin at 7 p.m. from a panel of local celebrity judges.
The contestants are Lou Salvino, Valerie Salvino, Car Merry, Mandy Kurowski, Scott Cundiff, Jessica Porcelli, Jarrod Fritz and Evelyn Finch.
