WHEELING, W.VA. — South Carolina wrapped up a three-game road trip with a 5-0 loss to Wheeling in ECHL hockey on Sunday at WesBanco Arena.
The Stingrays fell to 18-19-1-3 with the loss.
The Nailers (18-13-2-4) needed just 25 seconds to take the lead for good as defenseman Zach Hansen tipped a shot under the right arm of Stingrays goaltender Ryan Zapolski (L, 31 saves on 36 shots) for his second goal of the season. Defenseman Carl Sneep made it 2-0 at the 16:38 mark.
Cody Wild gave the Nailers a three-goal lead on the power play at 14:51 of the second period, blasting a feed past Zapolski from the left-wing point. Christiaan Minella sent the Nailers into the second intermission with a 4-0 edge with 42 seconds left in the period.
Minella added one final goal at 17:22 of the third period. Netminder Peter Delmas recorded his first shutout of the season, stopping 20 shots.
South Carolina finished 0 for 5 on the power play, while the Nailers went 1 for 2.
The Stingrays return to the North Charleston Coliseum on Tuesday against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7 p.m. Tickets at the box office are two for the price of one. College tickets are $5 with valid ID. Hockey Happy Hour featuring $2 beer from 6-7 p.m.
