Blum, of Pennsylvania, also serves as chairwoman and president of the PNC Foundation.
The breakfast is one of YWCA of Greater Charleston’s primary fundraisers, and is co-sponsored by the City of Charleston.
“This event was founded with the purpose of celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as to bring business and professional leaders together to celebrate his legacy,” event committee member Vanessa Turner Maybank said.
In 1998 Blum received the YWCA’s Tribute to Women award. Blum’s commitment to the organization made her an ideal choice as this year’s speaker, Maybank said.
“I certainly felt great honor in being asked to participate in this breakfast,” Blum said. “When I looked at the past speakers I felt honored to be included in them.”
Past keynote speakers include Boeing Vice President and General Manager Marco Cavazzoni and NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr.
Blum’s biography says she directs PNC Grow Up Great, a $350 million bilingual, philanthropic program that supports early childhood education.
“My family believed in the importance of education and made sure that we all had opportunities to really develop as best we could. I think those are the kind of things that Dr. King wanted for children of all backgrounds,” Blum said.
Blum joined PNC’s legal division in 1977 and was named to her current position in July of 2002, according to her biography.
She is a member of both the Pennsylvania and Allegheny County bar associations, her biography states. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970 and graduated from the university’s School of Law in 1973.
She serves on the school’s board of trustees, and is past president of its Alumni Association, amongst other titles,
Numerous area businesses are expected to appear at this year’s breakfast, including representatives from the College of Charleston, Publix, Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union and Boeing, Maybank said.
The event will be held 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the College of Charleston’s TD Arena, 301 Meeting St.
