WALHALLA — A former candidate for Oconee County sheriff is suing several people he says are involved in getting him arrested on an attempted kidnapping charge.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/V5LKU9) that James Bartee's lawsuit accuses an informant of setting up his arrest. Bartee has denied the charge he tried to get the informant to kidnap a retired judge to prevent him from appearing at a hearing in May.

Bartee's suit says the chief prosecutor in Oconee County conspired with her husband, who leads the county's Republican party, and other law officers and candidates for sheriff.

Bartee withdrew from the race before the June primary.
