SC Air National Guard getting first black general

COLUMBIA — The South Carolina Air National Guard is getting its first black general.

Col. Calvin Elam is being promoted to the rank of brigadier general Sunday at the McEntire Joint National Guard Base outside of Columbia. Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston will promote Elam.

Elam now serves as the assistant adjutant general for Air for the South Carolina National Guard.

The Greenwood native is also the chief executive officer for Elam Financial Group.
