Pinewood Prep’s inside muscle proved too much for Northwood Academy as the Lady Panthers picked up a 65-56 win in a matchup of two ranked SCISA girls high school basketball powers before a standing room only crowd.

Senior forward Brianna Boyd scored 19 points and fellow senior post Jenifer Rhodes added 13 as the two-time defending SCISA AAA state champions improved to 12-3 on the season. Northwood Academy dropped to 15-2 on the season.

Senior point guard Raygon Hendrix added 15 points for Pinewood Prep.

The effort by Pinewood Prep’s big three offset another high-scoring show from Northwood junior guard Amber Campbell, who came into the game averaging 31 points. Campbell scored 12 of her 36 points in the fourth quarter on Friday night.

“We felt like coming in that they didn’t have an answer for our two inside players. We knew that if we got them going, we would be in good shape,” Pinewood Prep coach Nancy Beatty said. “We knew Amber would find a way to get her points. She got out on the break several times and hit some layups. We did a good job of limiting their other players and we very pretty efficient on offense of executing what we needed to do.”

Boyd and Rhodes were relatively quiet in the first half but got going in the third quarter. The pair combined for 14 of Pinewood Prep’s 16 third quarter points. Boyd scored 13 points in the second half.

The game was tied at 14 after one period but Pinewood Prep quickly opened up a nine-point lead at 25-16 four minutes into the second. Northwood cut the margin to 25-24, but Pinewood ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 32-26 lead at the break.

Pinewood opened up its largest lead at 39-28 early in the third and led 48-38 heading into the final quarter.

Down 57-45 with 2:50 left in the game, Campbell sparked an 11-1 run to cut the margin to 58-56 with 1:01 remaining in the game. Pinewood Prep, however, again had an answer, scoring the final seven points of the game.

“We’ll likely play Northwood two more times this year, but this was certainly a huge win for us,” said Beatty. “It’s always good to win on the road and we knew how important this game was for both teams.”

The teams will meet again on Feb. 8 at Pinewood Prep.
