Quintin and Chantel McGrew have lost custody of two children for the third time since their infant son was fatally mauled last spring, a state official confirmed Friday.

The most recent action by the state Department of Social Services stemmed from a Jan. 3 report that one of the children was bitten by a dog. The boy suffered puncture wounds to his right cheek and the left side of his nose.

Deputies from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the recent attack, picked up the boy and girl Friday afternoon. Sheriff’s spokesman Dan Moon could not comment on any developments in the case.

DSS spokeswoman Marilyn Matheus confirmed the state action, but she declined to discuss the details.

Quintin McGrew’s attorney, Andy Savage of Charleston, also would not make any statements. Reached this week, 24-year-old Chantel McGrew would not talk about the dog bite, but she was glad that the boy did not die, she said.

The married couple were first thrust into public scrutiny in April when their infant son, Aiden, was dismembered and killed by the family’s Labrador retriever mix.

The boy’s 29-year-old father, who was said to be sleeping when his son was snatched from a bouncy swing, faces a charge of unlawful conduct toward a child in connection with the death. He is awaiting trial.

The two children returned to their Ridgeville rental home in June. Two months later they again were removed after the 7-year-old girl told counselors that she saw her parents engaging in a sexual threesome and watching homemade pornographic films.

State investigators deemed the account unfounded, and the children went home again in September.

That same month, a relative implicated the duo in the theft of her wedding ring. They were later fined $750 each.

In the recent dog attack, sheriff’s deputies completed a report “as information,” the document stated. At this time, the report continued, the incident does not rise to the level of a crime “until further evidence or information is collected.”
