POMARIA — A historic church in Newberry County has burned.

The fire at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pomaria was reported Thursday morning.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters from Newberry and Lexington counties worked about four hours to control the blaze.

The church was founded in 1761. The building that burned was completed in 1938. Only the granite sanctuary walls were left.

The Newberry County sheriff’s office, the State Law Enforcement Division and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives are trying to determine how the fire started. Sheriff Lee Foster says the fire appears to have started at the back of the church.
