Berkeley County Sheriffs Office awarded grant to help reduce fatal DUIs
The S.C. Office of Highway Safety awarded the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office a grant to help reduce fatal drunken driving wrecks, authorities say.
The grant, worth $99,104, will allow the Sheriff’s Office to add another deputy to its Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic, or HEAT, team, spokesman Dan Moon said.
The Sheriff’s Office plans to use the funds to pay for that deputy’s salary as well as equipment, Moon said.
The county’s fatality rate has dropped 25 percent since the team was implemented in November of 2009, Moon said.
