River Oaks student wins Dorchester 2 spelling bee for second time
River Oaks Middle School seventh-grader Cassidy Etue repeated Thursday as Dorchester School District 2's top speller.
But her victory was overshadowed when second-place finisher Razeen Basunia, a sixth grader at Rollings Middle School of the Arts, insisted that he spelled his word, “salve,” correctly.
After Razeem spelled the word, the judges left the room to listen to the recording before returning and eliminating the boy, determining that he had spelled it “S-A-L-V.”
“(The recording) was very clear,” said bee cooridinator Elizabeth Rabb.
Cassidy then went on to spell that word, plus “patel” and was declared the winner.
