Jan. 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, 30: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30-11:30 a.m. Walk through many distinct habitats allows group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-in registrations at Caw Caw are welcome. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders.

Jan. 5-May 29: Team Charleston Competitive Training Team at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-noon (Saturday) and 5-7 p.m. (Wednesday). This team is for young climbers who have competition experience and a strong desire to succeed at national level competitions. Spend five hours a week training and honing your skills. For more information, email rlavarnway@ccprc.com. You may register for this course after the start date; call 795-4386. Parents must attend the informational meeting or have Wall Manager approval prior to registering their child. Monthly payments options are available. Age: 10-17. Fee: $510/$485 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 5-May 28: Team Charleston Junior Team at James Island County Park. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (Saturday) and 5-7 p.m. (Tuesday). This team is for youth who wish to take their climbing to the next level. Spend four hours a week training and honing your skills. For more information, email rlavarnway@ccprc.com. You may register for this course after the start date; call 795-4386. Age: 8-14. Fee: $450/$425 CCR Discount.

Jan. 11: Folly Beach Bird Walk at Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve. 8:30-10:30 a.m. This walk focuses on the northeast end of Folly Island. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: Free; however, pre-registration is required.

Jan. 11: Eating with the Seasons at Bulow County Park. 10 a.m.-noon. Explore fruits and vegetables that are currently in season, learn how to prepare them, and why eating this way is a smart choice. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 12: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 103: Climbing Movement at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Climb smarter not harder, as we cover the basics of climbing technique where small gains in technique lead to big gains in ability. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 12: Explore Your Parklands: Explore Old Towne. 1-4 p.m. Advance registration is required to participate. This remarkable 67-acre property neighbors one of the most significant sites in the state, Charles Towne Landing. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount.

Jan. 13: Family Climbing: Family Belay Lesson at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. This program is a great way to spend time together as a family, while climbing and learning new skills. Children ages 4-13 will climb while adults learn to belay. Children ages 14 and up can learn to belay as well as climb. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 4 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 19: “Super” califragilistic Saturday at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Ride bikes, play games, paddle canoes and kayaks, and/or scale The Climbing Wall. Age: 6-9. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 19: Carolina Rice at Wannamaker County Park. 10-11:30 a.m. Examine the legacy behind rice production; early South Carolina’s most profitable and influential industry. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 20: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 202: Intermediate Technique at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This intermediate technique class will help you reach the next level. A current CCPRC Belay Card required and you must be able to climb in the 5.9-route range. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 21-25: Kayak Rolling and Rescues: Intro to Kayak Rolling. 7-8:30 p.m. (Monday and Wednesday) and 6-8 p.m. (Friday). One of the greatest self-rescue tools a kayaker has is rolling, which also sharpens other boating skills. Small pool classes ensure your comfort throughout the process. Participants ages 13-15 may register for one of these courses, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Age: 13 & up. Fee: $60/$50 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 23: Little Explorers: Art in the Park at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10-11 a.m. Let nature inspire your little Leonardos and Picassos. All the materials and tips will be provided for creating masterpieces that are both beautiful and earth friendly. A registered and paid chaperon is required. Age: 3-5. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 24: Portable Planetarium: Constellation Revelation at James Island County Park. 4-5 p.m. Constellations paint grand pictures that give us insight into how different cultures have seen their world, their universe and themselves. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 25: Beachwalker Bird Walks at Beachwalker Park. 8:30-11 a.m. Group will hike nearly two miles of pristine beach looking for a variety of birds, including raptors and songbirds. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: Free; however, pre-registration is required.

Jan. 26: Carolina Blues at Wannamaker County Park. 10-11 a.m. Come experiment with Carolina Indigo and examine the history behind the dye that starts off emerald green then changes to brilliant blue. Please note this program includes a fun tie dyeing activity. Each participant should bring a 100 percent cotton cloth item to dye. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 26: Seashore Exploration at Beachwalker Park. 1-2:30 p.m. Winter is a great time to explore the beach, gather a few keepsakes and learn to identify different types of shells and the organisms that create them. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 27: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 201: Sport Climbing at James Island County Park. Noon-4 p.m. Lead climbing, specifically sport climbing, is the next step after top roping. A current CCPRC Belay card required and you must be comfortable climbing a 5.8-rated route. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 28-Feb 1: Wilderness First Responder at James Island County Park. 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Learn to deal with medical emergencies when help is miles away and dialing 911 is not an option. This course will prepare you for emergencies that involve prolonged patient care, severe environments and improvised gear. It is considered the definitive medical training course for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts. Minimum enrollment required. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $700/$675 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 31: Caw Caw Photography Series: Sunrise Session at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 7-9 a.m. Awaken your senses to the natural and cultural world while stretching your photographic eye. Bring your cameras and let a park naturalist lead you to inspirational spots. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration is required.
