A former Hampton County sheriff’s deputy is accused of having sex with an underage child while working as a school resource officer.

State Law Enforcement Division agents charged Larry Heyward, 52, of Garnett, with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and one count of misconduct in office, according to SLED spokesman Thom Berry.

Heyward is accused of fondling and having sex with the child, who was between the ages of 11 and 14, according to arrest affidavits. The incidents allegedly occurred between August 2010 and December, the affidavits stated.

SLED investigated the allegations at the request of the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office, and agents arrested Heyward on Saturday, Berry said. He is being held at the Beaufort County detention center, he said.
