Charleston County school officials slated to break ground today on controversial Sullivan’s Island Elementary building
Charleston County School District officials will host an official groundbreaking ceremony today for the new Sullivan’s Island Elementary School.
The rebuilding of the school has been a controversial issue, with some saying the proposed size and design of the new elementary school isn’t appropriate for the small island community. The new school is slated to be 74,000 square feet, twice the size of the old one.
The county school board agreed in October to award a nearly $1 million contract to build the school’s foundation. The total project is estimated to cost $26.5 million.
A lawsuit challenges issues that could affect the school’s size and design still is pending in the Charleston County Court of Common Pleas.
Officials expected to be present today include: School Principal Susan King, Superintendent Nancy McGinley, School Board Vice Chair Craig Ascue, Sullivan’s Island Mayor Pro-Tem Mike Perkis, and School Rebuild Committee Chair and Parent Loren Ziff.
