Saul Krawcheck, clothing store owner

Saul Krawcheck, a retired co-owner of Jack Krawcheck Clothier for Men, died Friday. He was 86.

Born March 25, 1926, in Charleston, he was the son of Jack Krawcheck and Esther Bielsky Krawcheck. He served as an Air Force Cadet during World War II and was stationed at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a degree in economics.

In 1948, Krawcheck returned to Charleston to work as a salesman at Jack Krawcheck, which his father established in 1922 at 313 King St.

He eventually took over his father’s business and added two stores, a women’s clothier on King Street and another menswear store in Northwoods Mall. The company shut its doors in 1995.

Krawcheck was a member of the Charleston Preservation Society, Charleston Rotary Club and the Charleston Yacht Club. He enjoyed sailing and acting and starred in several plays at the Dock Street Theatre.

He also directed the March of Dimes campaign for the Metropolitan Charleston Chapter for many years, an endeavor that helped fund research on birth defects and genetic disorders.

At 74, Krawcheck earned a secondary degree in fine arts from the College of Charleston.

He is survived by his wife, Blossom Krawcheck; a son, Larry Krawcheck; two daughters, Marcy Krawcheck and Mackie Krawcheck Moore; and six grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Beth Elohim Cemetery in Charleston. Arrangements are being handled by Stuhr’s Downtown Chapel of Charleston.
