Goose Creek’s Reedy not pursuing another job, but will listen if CSU calls

Goose Creek High School football coach Chuck Reedy will not actively pursue the head coaching position at Charleston Southern University, but said he will listen if the school approaches him.

“I am happy at Goose Creek and do not want to leave,” said Reedy, who has college coaching experience as both a head coach and assistant coach. “I will not contact them, but if they contact me, I will listen. You never say never to a situation.”

The Charleston Southern position opened when 51-year old coach Jay Mills announced that he was retiring from the coaching profession Thursday afternoon. He coached at Charleston Southern from 2003-12 and compiled a 48-63 record. He led the Buccaneers to the 2005 Big South championship. The team set a school record with a 9-2 record the following season. Mills also guided the team to a school-record 14-game winning streak from 2005-06.

Charleston Southern athletic director Hank Small said he plans to move quickly to hire a head coach, but refused to comment about specific candidates, including Reedy.

Small said several former NFL assistants have contacted him and that he will attend the NCAA Football Coaches Convention in Nashville next week before compiling a list of candidates.

Reedy just completed his 11th year as coach at Goose Creek. He inherited a program that was one of the worst in the state and turned it into one of the best. The Gators won the Division II-AAAA state championship in 2011 and went 13-0 this past season before being kicked out of the playoffs by the High School League for using an ineligible player.

Reedy is no stranger to college football fans.

He has 37 years of experience at the college and high school levels. He served as an assistant at Clemson from 1978-89 and was the offensive coordinator in Brad Scott’s final season at South Carolina in 1998.

The 63-year-old Reedy also served as head coach at Baylor from 1993-96, compiling a 23-22 record and leading the Bears to a berth in the 1994 Alamo Bowl.
