Clemson names Reed defensive backs coach, lands four-star recruit Ogundeko

CLEMSON — Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced the hiring of Mike Reed as the program’s new defensive backs coach Friday.

Reed held the same position at N.C. State. He replaces Charlie Harbison, who went to Auburn last month. Clemson’s defensive backs were coached by graduate assistants during bowl practice.

Reed has eight years of coaching experience at the college level — he helped David Amerson become an All-American cornerback at N.C. State — and he also coached for five seasons at the NFL level, coaching former Clemson star Brian Dawkins while with Philadelphia.

“I am excited to have Mike Reed join our staff,” Swinney said. “He brings the entire package. He is very familiar with our recruiting base. He is familiar with our players and he knows the ACC.

“He has had great success at N.C. State in terms of coaching All-ACC players and has significant experience coaching at the college and NFL level.

“I like the fact that he has worked for or played for somegreat coaches, people like Tom Coughlin, Tom O’Brien, Andy Reid and Jim Johnson. He is a very good fit for Clemson.”

Clemson received a commitment from four-star defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko (6-3, 229), a Brooklyn N.Y. prep product. Ogundeko is the third end in the class for Clemson and is the 17th commitment in Clemson’s 2013 class. Ogundeko said he felt comfortable at Clemson and liked the coaches. ...Clemson reserve quarterback Morgan Roberts told the Greenville News he plans to transfer to Yale. Roberts was buried on the Clemson depth chart behind Tajh Boyd, Chad Kelly and Cole Stoudt.
