Only days after announcing that he would be a likely candidate for Congress, Republican Charleston County Council member Elliott Summey said he will not seek election to the 1st Congressional District seat vacated by Tim Scott.
Meanwhile, state Sen. Larry Grooms said Friday he is entering the race and will make an official announcement next week.
Grooms, a Bonneau Republican recently re-elected without opposition, said he values the work he has done in the General Assembly for the past 16 years, but what is going on in Washington could undermine South Carolina and other states. I want to be where the fight is, he said.
Summey bowed out after talking with his family over the holidays.
We decided that this is not the best time for us to embark on this endeavor, he said.
I have a passion for public service, and know that I have the right experience to help this state and this nation during these difficult times.
Filing for the seat will open on Jan. 18.
