Highway Patrol: Charleston County deputy investigating hit-and-run struck by drunk driver

A Charleston County sheriff’s deputy involved in a wreck Thursday night on U.S. Highway 78 was struck by a drunk driver, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Robert Cart, 60, was one of several deputies in the area of 9919 Highway 78 investigating a hit-and-run when he was involved in a two-vehicle wreck about 9:20 p.m., sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said.

Cart was attempting to make a U-turn on the road when his patrol cruiser was struck in the side by a 2004 Jeep Liberty, Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said.

Wyant identified that vehicle’s driver as Debra Shanholtzer, 45, of Goose Creek.

Cart was cited with failure to yield, and Shanholtzer was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, Wyant said.

No injuries were reported in that incident, Brady said.

Thursday’s hit-and-run involved a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Brady said.

The vehicle involved in the auto-pedestrian incident left the scene, Brady said, and no information was known Friday about it or the driver involved.

That incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, Brady said.
