Video shows Coleman’s new traffic flow
MOUNT PLEASANT — Town Council members got their first look Thursday at how traffic would move on Coleman Boulevard after its makeover, which is expected to begin later this year.
And most seemed to like what they saw.
The computer-simulated video showed an aerial view of how traffic would flow as Coleman intersects with Chuck Dawley and Ben Sawyer boulevards.
That intersection is set to be converted from a traffic light to the town’s first two-lane roundabout as part of Coleman Boulevard’s upcoming makeover.
The video was created in part to educate drivers about how they would pass through the intersection. Councilman Elton Carrier called the video excellent, saying, “Our residents really want to see the simulation.”
Councilman Chris Nickels added, “To me, it looks effective.”
The town plans to post the video soon on its website.
Still, not all council members were won over. Councilwoman Linda Page said she remains concerned about how Coleman’s changes would affect delivery trucks and other large vehicles.
“I don’t want to drive commuter traffic into the Old Village or any established neighborhood,” she said.
Bicyclists uncomfortable with the idea of biking through the new roundabout could use new mixed-use paths and crosswalks instead, said Jim Fisher of Transystems Corp., which did the simulation.
The town could begin work on Coleman’s first phase next month. That $500,000 project would add a raised median, on-street parking, bike lanes and activity zones to a short stretch of Coleman between Fairmont and Pherigo streets — where the Beach Co. is building a large, mixed-use project.
The second and final phase, which would extend similar work — and drainage improvements — east to Chuck Dawley and west to Simons Street — could begin this summer.
Some council members also asked about how Coleman’s new on-street parking would work, and Fisher said it will be designed with 26-foot-long spaces and 6-foot-long breaks so cars would be able to enter them without going in reverse.
