Only days after announcing hed be a likely candidate for Congress, Charleston County Council member and Republican Elliott Summey said he will not seek election to the 1st Congressional District seat vacated by Tim Scott.

Meanwhile, state Sen. Larry Grooms said today he is entering the race and will make an official announcement next week.

Grooms, a Bonneau Republican recently re-elected without opposition, said he values the work he has done in the General Assembly for the past 16 years, but what is going on in Washington could undermine South Carolina and other states. I want to be where the fight is, he said.

Summey bowed out after talking with his family over the holidays. We decided that this is not the best time for us to embark on this endeavor, he said. I have a passion for public service, and know that I have the right experience to help this state and this nation during these difficult times.

More than a dozen potential candidates, mostly Republicans, have said they are interested in the seat. Filing opens on Jan. 18.
