College of Charleston’s Lawrence named Southern Conference men’s basketball player of the week

College of Charleston senior point guard Andrew Lawrence was named Southern Conference men’s basketball player of the week Wednesday for games played Dec. 18 through Jan. 1.

Lawrence led the Cougars to a 4-0 record over the holiday break with wins over Old Dominion, Coastal Carolina, Vermont and Marist.

The Cougars have won eight of their last 10 games and boast the most road victories in the nation among NCAA Division I schools who remain unbeaten on the road with a 5-0 record.

Lawrence averaged a team-leading 16.8 points and 2.5 steals in the four games. He also averaged 4.0 rebounds per game and shot 47.6 percent from 3-point range.

College of Charleston senior center Latisha Harris was named SoCon women’s basketball player of the week.

Harris, from Aynor, had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the Cougars’ 82-74 win over Richmond. She had 20 points and 13 rebounds in the Cougars’ win over Charleston Southern.

South Carolina Stingrays goaltender Ryan Zapolski was named ECHL goaltender of the week for Dec. 24-30.

Zapolski, 26, recorded two shutouts last week, stopping 26 shots in a 4-0 victory over Gwinnett and a 23-save performance in a 3-0 win against Wheeling. The Erie, Penn., native leads the ECHL with a 1.65 goals-against average and .939 save percentage.

Forwards Jared Knight and Tyler Randell were assigned to the Stingrays from Providence of the American Hockey League.

Knight, 20, is a 2010 second-round draft pick of the Boston Bruins (32nd overall). Randell, 21, was a sixth-round pick of the Bruins in 2009.

The Stingrays are on the road Friday and Saturday before returning home on Sunday to face Florida at 3 p.m.
