Man arrested on multiple drug, weapons charges in traffic stop
Charleston police arrested a man on multiple traffic, drug and weapons charges after a traffic stop early Tuesday.
Police charged Marcus Dwayne Campbell, 37, of Freer Street, with possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, simple possession of marijuana, unlawful carrying of a handgun, possession of a stolen handgun, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, failure to stop for blue light and siren, improper lane change, driving under suspension, and open container in a vehicle, spokesman Charles Francis said.
Police pulled over Campbell at Dills Bluff and Williams roads after the vehicle he was driving swerved across the road and onto the shoulder multiple times, made an improper turn, and struck a parked vehicle before coming to a stop in the backyard of a residence, Francis said.
Campbell stepped out of the vehicle and attempted to run but was apprehended by police, Francis said.
Police said they found a loaded pistol in Campbell’s right coat pocket. Francis said the gun was reported stolen to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office in May 2011.
Police confiscated 8.2 grams of cocaine, a gram of marijuana and $914 in cash during the traffic stop, Francis said.
A cup of alcohol also was found in the vehicle, Francis said.
According to court records, Campbell was being held in the Charleston County jail on $261,147 bail set Tuesday by Charleston County Magistrate James A. Turner.
