Judge OKs agreement in death of SC student
COLUMBIA — A judge has approved a settlement giving $175,000 to the family of a Carolina Forest High School student shot and killed by a school police officer in 2009.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports http://bit.ly/Xk8AuA Thursday that the agreement approved last month brings an end to the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Trevor Varinecz.
The 16-year-old student was shot after he attacked resource officer Marcus Rhodes with a bayonet in October 2009.
Trevor Varinecz had Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. His parents sued Rhodes and Horry County schools, saying they wanted better treatment for students with disabilities and special needs.
The money will come from the S.C. Insurance Reserve Fund. Court documents show police and school officials agreed to the settlement but admit no wrongdoing.
